Obesity and Psychology

Psychologic problems and diseases are important factors among the causes of obesity. On the other hand, obesity can lead to serious mental disorders, too. Obesity cannot be only classified as a physiological problem; it also needs psychosocial approach during the treatment process.

Among the causes of obesity, mental conditions and disorders are important motives.

Psychological and social problems such as sadness, low self-esteem, dissatisfaction in relationships, inadequacy in work and social life, and difficulty in sexual life are more common in obese individuals compared to non-obese people. Accordingly psychological disorders are more common among obese individuals.

From childhood to adulthood, people who are overweight tend to face bullying, social exclusion and even humiliation among peers.

Biological factors and psychosocial factors caused by the gender role imposed on women leave them at a higher risk than men in terms of dealing with obesity and related physiological and mental conditions.

It should never be ignored that untreated mental disorders can be an important cause of obesity.
