Surgical Quality, Hot Chemotherapy and Used Smart Drugs Extends Life in Ovarian Cancer

Recently, as an invited speaker of the European Society of Gynecological Oncology (ESGO), we discussed ovarian cancer from A to Z at the Tumor Council. While talking about our own experiences in the light of scientific data, we focused especially on advanced stage ovarian cancer patients. In the last 20 years, survival rates in advanced ovarian cancer have doubled with the advancement of surgical techniques and the technology that allows it, and the development of new generation chemotherapy drugs.

We Have Powerful Weapons Against Ovarian Cancer…

Ovarian cancer is insidious. Since the tumor does not give any symptoms while it is still in its early stages, it can only be detected by chance during a doctor's examination for another reason. While it is possible to provide a complete cure only with surgery in the early stages, we cannot say the same thing so easily in the advanced stages.

But we also have important weapons in advanced stage ovarian cancer. The most important of these is that no tumor remains from the existing tumor in the operation to be performed. Another option is hot chemotherapy. Hot chemotherapy is a treatment method in which chemotherapy drugs heated at 42ºC are applied to the abdominal cavity after the tumor removal procedures are completed in ovarian cancer surgery in eligible patients.

Throughout my professional life, I had the opportunity to work alongside world-renowned physicians in the leading centers of these countries in the United States, Italy, Germany, England and India. One of my observations is that the surgical techniques and surgical success we apply in Turkey are not inferior to the world's leading centers.

“Success is achieved in 45-82 of 100 patients”

Especially in ovarian cancer, when choosing the surgeon who will perform the operations of the patients, they should be conscious of researching the tumor-free rates based on the previous surgeries performed by the surgeon. Patients and their relatives should know what they are facing. If one of our strongest weapons against this disease is the quality of surgery, it should be investigated.

This success is achieved in 45-82 of 100 patients in the world's leading centers. In our series, we achieve tumor-free success in 81% of our patients. Ovarian cancer surgeries, which are performed to prevent the tumor from remaining, can take up to 8-9 hours. After the surgery, the chemotherapy process begins.
