Relationship Between Diabetes and Obesity

Diabetes and Obesity

Excessive fat accumulation in the body prevents the release of hormones that transport insulin to cells, leading to type 2 diabetes. If diabetes has developed due to obesity, it is necessary to solve the obesity problem first to treat it.

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), 80% of type 2 diabetes cases in Europe are due to obesity or being overweight. As the excess weight in the body increases, the hormonal balance deteriorates accordingly, and the body shows insulin resistance.

Although seen as separate from each other, diabetes and obesity are closely linked because insulin resistance causes weight gain, and weight gain creates more resistance.

Measures Against Diabetes and Obesity

Both diseases occur for the same reasons and trigger each other. With the right treatments, it is possible to prevent both. The biggest reason is eating habits. Gaining proper nutritional habits opens the door to a healthy life for every individual.

Is Metabolic Surgery Applied to Every Diabetes Patient?

Not every diabetic patient is suitable for metabolic surgery. This surgery is only applied to individuals with type 2 diabetes and uncontrollable blood sugar values.

What is Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes, the most common type of diabetes, is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too high. Blood glucose is your main source of energy and comes mainly from the food you eat. In type 2 diabetes, your body doesn’t make enough insulin or doesn’t use insulin well. Since the insulin secreted by the pancreas cannot be used by the body in the usual way, its sugar-lowering effect is incomplete and presents various clinical symptoms. Type 2 diabetes occurs most often in middle-aged and older people. Today, with the increase in childhood obesity, it has started to be seen in children and young people. Type 2 diabetes, which constitutes approximately 95% of all diabetes cases, requires lifelong follow-up and treatment.

Overweight and obesity are the main causes of type 2 diabetes.

What is Obesity?

Obesity, also commonly known as overweight, is defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that poses a health risk. A body mass index (BMI) over 25 is considered overweight, and over 30 is considered as obesity.
